Let's Do Something Amazing Together

Every December, I am fondly reminded of my mother's homemade fudge and the smell of pine trees decorated with ornaments. When I was growing up, like many families in our neighborhood, we struggled economically to get by, especially during the holidays. Thankfully, however, we were blessed in that we never missed a meal.

Today, it's a much different story in this country. Despite a healthy economy and an unemployment rate that’s at a near-record low, there are millions of Americans struggling to get consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy life. It's not necessarily the lack of food but the right kinds of food. People, especially children and the elderly, aren't getting what they need. Their pursuit of happiness is hampered by no fault of their own. In a nation as rich as ours, we can do so much better. That's where we've come in.

Since we launched Focus Relief Photography for Charity about a month ago, your response has been beyond our expectations. Because of this, we have been able to donate all our profits to food banks across the country, serving hundreds of meals to those with the most need.

This holiday season, let's do something amazing together. After you've taken care of your immediate family, let's do something to help those less fortunate families around us while also treating yourself to some stunningly beautiful photography for your home or office. When you invest in one of our signed, limited-edition, gallery-quality photos, we'll make sure 100 percent of our profits go toward programs to eliminate hunger in America. To help nudge you along, we're including a one-time, 30% discount code at the bottom of the page. Plus, free shipping on every order. When you invest in art and humanity, everyone wins.

In this issue of the InFocus newsletter, we know you are busy so we'll keep it short. We showcase a recent blog on the issue of hunger in America as it relates to senior citizens. In addition, we share stories in the fight against hunger and, as always, our photo of the week.

This is likely our last newsletter of 2018 - but we're not done yet! We have some very exciting news coming out shortly. Be sure to follow us on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and on our website, FocusRelief.com, for our latest updates.

In peace,

Spotlight: Seniors and Hunger

Although many may not realize it, senior citizens currently face a vast number of hunger related issues, as one in every six seniors face the threat of hunger and improper nourishment, according to Aging in Place. That’s around 8 million out of the 49 million citizens 65 years of age and older. Due to this fact, it’s reported by AARP that seniors face a healthcare bill of over 130 billion every year because of medical issues relating to hunger. When it comes to where the highest percentage of food insecure senior citizens can be found, it’s best to look directly at both race and class.

In looking at class, Aging in Place cited professor Craig Gunderson of the University of Illinois in stating that the main areas where food insecurity is increasing the most is among Americans making less than $30,000 per year and those between the ages of 60 and 69. A large part of this comes from a decrease in wages and overall net worth, because of the fact that many seniors lost a lot of money when the stock market crashed, and weren’t able to recover as they entered retirement, Gunderson said. In information provided by the National Council on Aging, “⅓ of senior households has no money left over each month or is in debt after meeting essential expenses” (NCOA), further hurting seniors’ fight against hunger.
